Jack W. Long ~ Carbondale May 25, 2021

Jack W. Long, age 95, died Tuesday, May 25, 2021 at Manor Court, Liberty Village of Carbondale.

Jack is survived by his wife, Bonnie, three children; Phillis Steinbach of Cleveland, Ohio, Connie Mohan of Stow, Ohio, Keith Huffman (wife Peggi) of Frontenac, Missouri; twin grandchildren, Jackson and Olivia Huffman, both of Chicago, Illinois; sister-in-law Elline Long; and nephews Ed, Daniel and Jack Long. Jack is predeceased by his parents, Otto and Martha Long and his brothers Ed Long and Jerry Long.

Upon graduation from high school, Jack served in the Army as a rifleman stationed in Germany during World War II. He received several decorations and citations including the Victory Medal. He was especially pleased and honored when he was chosen to participate in the 2012 Central Illinois Honor Flight program which included visits to the war memorials in Washington D.C.

After receiving his discharge, Jack attended SIU-Carbondale where he earned a Bachelor’s in Education. His time at SIU was highlighted by years of playing basketball for the then “Maroons.” Jack was an avid sports fan and especially loved his Salukis. He was a long-time season ticket holder and donor to athletics. He rarely missed a home football or basketball game.

Jack also loved a good party. He was host to many celebrations at he and Bonnie’s home surrounded by life-long friends and new acquaintances. They opened their home to all who wanted to come. Much laughter and story-telling took place during those times. And everyone left those gatherings feeling merrier.

Jack was not embarrassed about his age. In fact, he loved to brag about it. Each birthday was a milestone that he gladly shared with everyone. He once told his doctor; he expected the doctor to help him reach double 8’s. He surpassed that birthday with flying colors. After 95 healthy years, his body gave out and he passed peacefully.

Arrangements are being coordinated by Walker Funeral Homes of Carbondale. There will be a graveside service at 11:30 on Friday, May 28 at Murdale Gardens of Memory, Murdale Gardens Road, Murphysboro, IL 62966.
