Edward Benson O’Dell III passed away with his family by his side on February 8, 2022, at the age of 68, at Herrin Hospital.
On July 25, 1953, Edward was born in Carbondale to the late Edward Benson O’Dell II and Olive “Sis” (Thompson-O’Dell) Isom. Edward was a lifetime resident of Carbondale and graduated from Carbondale Community High School in 1971. He married his high school sweetheart, Susan (Ellis) O’Dell, on June 7, 1975, also of Carbondale, who still survives.
He is also survived by his loving children, Sarah (Jim) Ford of Cambria, Edward (Jill) O’Dell IV of Carbondale, Aaron (Courtney) O’Dell of Carbondale; eight grandchildren, Taryn Ford, Emilyn Ford, Adam Mays, Jacy Mays, Carter O’Dell, Avery O’Dell, Bradley O’Dell, Addison O’Dell; sisters, Pat (Dale) Stearns, Linda (Jerry) Robinson, Sharon (Jeff) Rawls; nieces and nephews, Pam (Michael) Brown, Jeff (Cassie) Stearns, Ed (Jen) Robinson, Leo (Melissa) Robinson, Kent (Josie) Rawls, Tori Rawls; and many cherished relatives and friends.
Edward worked for J&L Robinson Construction Company for 47 years as a respected and skilled project supervisor. He was also very well known in the hunting community throughout Southern Illinois as an avid duck, goose, turkey, and deer hunter. Since his retirement in December 2020, he has spent his time hunting with his dear friends and cheering at his grandchildren’s sporting events from the sidelines.
He was a loving son, brother, nephew, cousin, husband, father, and most importantly, an awesome Grandpa. He will be missed every day by many. He also was a lifelong animal lover, especially his dogs Opie, Fiji, and Tater, who will miss him terribly.

Services will be held at 1:30 pm Sunday, February 13, 2022, at Walker Funeral Home in Carbondale, with Pastor Paul Hicks officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 to 1:30 am at Walker Funeral Home on Sunday, February 13.
